projects: about

What is "Project Management"?

The well-established Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), as maintained by the Project Management Institute, defines a project as "a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result" (PMBOK, Third Edition, page 5).  In discussing the art of project management itself, several main components are identified:

bullet Identifying requirements
bullet Establishing clear and achievable objectives
bullet Satisfying quality, scope, time and cost requirements
bullet Adapting to stakeholder expectations

The PMBOK further divides a project into five major phases or "core processes":

  1. Initiating.  A project must initially be defined, authorised, and funded.  Staff must be assigned, and initial objectives must be delineated.
  2. Planning.  The individual subtasks must be identified, and objectives clarified.  The overall project scope must be agreed to by all stakeholders.
  3. Executing.  This is the phase in which the project objectives are implemented.  All project subtasks must be executed according to the project plan, and all deliverables must be completed as agreed.
  4. Monitoring and Controlling.  This process spans the entire length of the process.  The project progress must be tracked and reported to management, and corrective action taken where necessary.
  5. Closing.  Once all tasks are completed, the project must be brought to an orderly close.  This may include completing final documentation, decommissioning or repurposing project equipment, and reassigning project staff.

Quest’s project management staff is fully trained to understand this model, and to deliver projects that meet or exceed expectations in all categories. This means that your company can expect a project with the following characteristics:

bullet Satisfies customer expectations in all regards
bullet Delivered in the promised timeframe
bullet Meets capital and operational budget constraints
bullet Achieves all stated functional requirements

It is precisely this complexity that makes good project management such a lofty goal. And of course, to achieve success on such a broad scale requires a high level of interaction with you, the client – which further assures that Quest delivers exactly what your company wants, needs, and expects.
